Coreshatter – Game Design

Coreshatter was a top down mobile roguelite action game that had a multitude of characters and a branching level system similar to Slay The Spires.

I worked on the title for 2 years as a designer and then senior designer before I moved onto another project.

Overview

As a designer on Coreshatter I was responsible for core systems, combat, character design, and admin work.

My duties included:

  • Designing all character visuals and abilities
  • Designing core systems related to progression, combat, and moment-to-moment gameplay
  • Led playtesting and balancing efforts
  • Creating all google sheets that were used for csv balancing, playtesting and automatic character creation
  • Light blueprint work

Coreshatter Design

Coreshatter was designed as a top down mobile roguelite action game where you took control of a hero character and battled hordes of enemies as you ascended through the map.

The player would take control of the character by swiping their finger across the screen to move, with the character attacking automatically when it was within range of a valid enemy.

Coreshatter also featured a card system where players would have a hand of 4 cards that refilled on a timer that they could play to buff themselves, use special attacks, heal, etc.

Like a traditional roguelike as you progressed deeper through the stages you were periodically offered various upgrades that would empower your character with new abilities and synergies.

Coreshatter Character Design

As a designer on Coreshatter I led the efforts on all characters and their designs, so a large part of my focus was on content creation through characters and their abilities.

Each character was designed with a specific playstyle in mind that could be augmented through a large number of cards and ability upgrades.

To facilitate the large number of characters and rapid prototyping that we were doing, I created a google sheet to allow us to track all of our characters, their abilities, and allowed us to playtest new ideas without the need of directly implementing it into the engine.

The character creator itself can be found here:
