Coreshatter – Game Design

Coreshatter was an in-development game that I worked on for a year+.
It eventually got cancelled due to other projects taking funding precedence.
Overview
On Coreshatter I was a foundational designer responsible for core systems, combat, and character design. My duties included:
- Being the owner/vision holder for character design and combat
- Designing core systems related to progression, combat, and general play
- Facilitating daily playtests with the rest of the team
- QA
- Light blueprint work
- Status reports on projects development
We had a small team of just 5 people working on the project
so my time was spent as needed between playtesting, design, qa, and admin work.
Coreshatter’s Overview
Coreshatter was designed as a top down mobile roguelite action game with a focus on 1 hero character vs hordes of enemies.
The player would take control of a character by swiping their finger across the screen to move, with the character attacking automatically when it was within range of a valid enemy.
Coreshatter also featured a card system where players would have a hand of 4 cards that refilled on a timer that they could utilize to buff themselves, kill enemies, etc.
It featured deep character progression where as you progressed through the stages you were offered
various upgrades that would empower your character with new abilities.
The abilities had a focus on having internal synergies and interesting combinatorics.
Coreshatter Character Design
As one of the principal designers on the project, a large part of my focus was on content creation through characters and their abilities.
Each character was designed with a large number of cards and upgrades in mind.
To facilitate the large number of characters and rapid prototyping that we were doing at the time, I created a google sheet to allow us to track all of our characters, what abilities we had designed, etc along with a partner sheet that we could use to do completely paper based playtesting of our game through voice.
The character creator itself can be found here:
